February 22, 2015-Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson has warned shoppers at Minnesota’s Mall of America to be “particularly careful” after Somalia’s al-Shabaab threatens an attack against US shopping malls. Minnesota is home to over 21,000 Somalis and is targeted by al-Shabaab for recruitment of new members for the terrorist organization.
Al-Shabaab released a video calling for attacks on malls in the US, Canada and Great Britain. The video used footage of the 2013 attack on Westgate Mall in Nairobi. The video urged Muslims to attack independently and quickly, invoking heaven as their reward.
The mall of America released a press statement saying that it has increased security and takes any threat seriously.
