march 13, 2015-Iol news reports that a drone strike killed a senior commander of al-Shabaab suspected of involvement in the Westgate shopping center massacre in Nairobi. Although Somali’a intelligence declined to say who carried out the strike, a source is quoted as saying, “we have Western security partners like the US government who help us fight terrorists in Somalia.”
Targeted in the strike was commander Aden Garar and two other al-Shabaab members who were driving west of Mogadishu yesterday. Witenesses said that all three men died in the attack.
The US has declined to comment.
