South Sudan’s War on Children:AU Report Says Deliberately Targeted

August 9, 2014-AFP reports that the 11-member African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child have concluded their investigation of children in South Sudan, saying “The present conflict can be characterized as nothing less than a war on children.” AFP quotes Julia Sloth-Nielsen, heading the committee, stating “It is not that these deaths are accidental or unfortunate by-products. We are reliably informed that children are being targeted, deliberately.”

More than 900 children have been abducted in the eastern war zone of Jonglei, while their are confirmed cases of rape of both girls and boys, said the report issued by the committee.

The report cites one case of 490 children found dead in a mass grave in Bor.
