IGAD Postpones South Sudan Peace Talks Yet Again

October 4, 2014- The Sudan Tribune reports today that IGAD has suspended the peace talks between the Government of Sudan and Riek Machar’s rebel opposition group in order consult with the top leadership over contentious issues. According to the Tribune, there are disagreements over power-sharing and the division of powers between the president and the prime minister to be nominated by the rebel opposition.

The Tribune quotes Machar’s spokesperson, James Gatdet Dak as saying, “IGAD mediation has decided to adjourn the peace talks so that its leadership can consult with the principals of the two warring parties.” He said that government delegates are dragging their feet and delaying the peace process while preparing for further violence. He added that they were not negotiating in good faith.
