UNMISS Says Even a Political Agreement May Not Stop the Fighting in South Sudan

October 24, 2014-New Vision reports today that the UN Mission in South Sudan is preparing itself for more fighting in the country despite a political deal between President Kiir and Riek Machar. According to the head of the mission, Danish diplomat Elen Loej, “We are preparing for what could happen if there is a political agreement and that political agreement is not fully supported by the military leaders and commanders on the ground.

Ambassador Loej has been in New York pushing top UN officials to put pressure on President Kiir and Riek machar to come to an agreement.

IGAD leaders from Ethiopia, Uganda and kenya were in Juba this week to pressure the parties to end the war.

Ambassador Loej made clear to the UN that even if a political agreement is reached, the fighting in South udan may not stop.
