President Obama Announces $110 Million for African Rapid Deployment Forces

August 7, 2014-The United States announced on Wednesday a decision to spend $110 million a year over the next three to five years on helping African countries to develop peacekeeping forces that can be rapidly deployed. The U.S. will partner with Senegal, Ghana, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda to create rapid deployment forces to be part of UN or AU missions.

According to U.S. President Obama, “The United States doesn’t have a desire to expand and create a big footprint inside of Africa..What we want to make sure we can do is partner with the African Union…with individual countries, to build their capacity. He said further that, “We’ve seen over time increasingly capable African peacekeepers who are deploying to address crises across the continent.”
