A Lesson From Ethiopia: “Political parties should avoid hate comments while campaigning”

Addis Ababa, 9 April 2015 (WIC) - President of Admas University Dr. Molla Tsegay said competing political parties should avoid hate comments while campaigning.
In an exclusive interview with WIC today, Dr Molla said that political parties taking part at the election debates being broadcast at the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) need to avoid hate remarks.

Political parties should use the debating session to promote their political agenda and to help voters make informed decisions in the election.

“Democracy cannot be achieved through a hate approach and without democracy, we could not sustain the existing stability and speedy development,” he said.
“I observed the debate at EBC going well, comparatively,” he pointed out.

The free media access and various subsidies given to competing political parties to enable them reach the people shows that democracy is booming in the country, he said.

According to Dr. Molla, there is neither a winner nor a loser party in the election. Ultimately, the winner is the people. Hence, political parties should give respect for the people’s choice.

“As far as they are running for the sake of the people, political parties should give value for the final verdict of the people and must respect their decision,” he said.

He also urged universities’ society to contribute their share for the peaceful conduct of the upcoming election as they have better understanding and information on election and democracy.

“We all must be careful as there might be foreigners who do not want to see Ethiopia’s progress. We must not allow them. We should say we don’t need any foreign witness on what is going on in our country. We are the witness.”
