South Sudan Parliament ratifies peace deal

REPORT

from Miraya FM

The National Legislative Assembly has ratified the agreement to resolve the conflict in South Sudan.

The deal was tabled before Parliament this morning and was received a unanimous vote from the legislature.

The adoption of the peace deal is part of the efforts to restore peace and end a nearly two yearlong conflict that has displaced thousands of people and left many others dead.

Last month, President Salva Kiir and the leader of the SPLM in opposition, signed the peace deal. The deal calls for President Kiir to serve as president in a 30-month transitional government, and for Riek Machar to be his first vice president.

The Speaker of the national parliament, Manasseh Magok Rundil commended the parliamentarians for sparing no effort to adopt the agreement.

“This is your resolution and your decision thank you,” he said
