February 23, 2015-The Africa Union, reports reuters, is urging the government of the DRC to accept help from UN forces in defeating the rebels operating in eastern Congo.

MONUSCO, the UN mission in Congo, is supposed to be supporting the offensive against FDLR, but suspended cooperation this month because two Congo generals leading the operation have been accused of human rights abuses.

President Kabila has said that the attack against the FDLR has begun without the UN peacekeeping force.

Following a meeting of the AU Peace and Security Council today, the AU special representative to the Great Lakes Region, Boubacar Gaoussou Diarra told Reuters, “We think that it should be a joint operation to succeed, which is why, today when Congo as a country renounced any logistical and professional support from MONUSCO, we were not very happy with this issue.”

The UN gave the DRC until mid-February to remove these generals from command of the mission but, according to President Kabila, the UN has not shown the DRC supporting evidence for the accusations.

The FDLr has ignored the January 2 deadline to surrender.
