New AU Special Representative Arrives in Somalia

 October 21, 2014

The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia and Head of AMISOM, Ambassador Maman S. Sidikou today (October 18) paid a courtesy call to Somalia President H.E. Sheikh Hassan Mahamud at the presidential palace – Villa Somalia – in the capital city Mogadishu.

This is the first visit to Mogadishu by the new SRCC since his appointment on July 9 this year.

“We welcome today, the Ambassador, the representative of the African Union to Somalia who is the successor of Ambassador Annadif. He arrived yesterday and has met with the President of Somalia. They discussed the current situation in Somalia, especially the security situation and also the progress made by the Somali national army (SNA) and how they can further be supported. You know that the African Union is helping the Somali people, because the forces with us here, and those that are fighting in the different regions of Somalia, are from different African countries,” said Dr. Abdirahman Beyle, Somalia’s Foreign Minister.

As required by protocol, the new Head of AMISOM met President Hassan to reiterate the African Union’s commitment to working with Somalia in order to return the Horn of African country to normalcy.

The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) is an active, regional peacekeeping mission operated by the African Union with the approval of the United Nations. It was created by the African Union’s Peace and Security Council on January 19th, 2007 with an initial six month mandate.

“I feel humbled and really honored because Somalia is dear to our hearts as Africans, because peace and stability in Somalia is peace and stability in the whole of Africa. On behalf of the Chair of the African Union Commission, I have reiterated to the president our firm commitment to stand by the people of Somalia until such time where the people of Somalia enjoy their Allah’s given right to freedom and prosperity,” said Ambassador Maman Sidikou, the new SRCC. Prior to his appointment, Ambassador Sidikou – who hails from Niger – was his country’s ambassador to the USA and has held several other high-level government positions. He replaces former SRCC Ambassador Mohamed Saleh Annadif who served from November 2012 to June 2014.
